Hillsborough Garden Events

Join us for one of our many specialist walks, workshops or garden tours.
Below are the topics and dates for these specialised events:

  • 14 May – Spring Planting Workshop
    Join the Walled Garden Team and learn how to plant out a range of vegetables and flowers in the garden. From preparing the soil, correct spacing and planting depth to getting your lines straight, the team will give you expert guidance.

  • 18 May – Planting productive vegetable gardens
    Join the Walled Garden Team as they introduce you to the range of fruit and vegetables being grown this year and explain the techniques they are using. Examine the early crops and enjoy the fruit blossom.

  • 7 June – Platinum Jubilee Tree Trail
    Enjoy the splendour of the gardens after-hours with Garden Manager Claire Woods for an extra special tour celebrating Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This is a 90-minute walking tour and an event not to be missed!

  • 11 June – Bee Friendly Gardening Workshop
    Led by Gardener and Bee keeper Nicky Armstrong, learn amazing facts and figures about bees, and discover the best plants to ensure for nectar and pollen in the garden all year round.

  • 15 June – June Tending the Walled Garden Walk
    Join the Walled Garden team as they demonstrate gardening techniques used to keep the garden looking its best, including weeding, mulching, pruning, staking, dead heading, thinning fruit and much more.

  • 9 July or 13 August – Summer Bouquets
    Participants will each harvest and condition flowers from the gardens at Hillsborough and create their own handtied bouquet under the instruction of our resident florist Lorna Brownlee.

  • 16 July – Summer Propagation Workshop
    Learn how to identify suitable plant material to use as propagules, select material and prepare and insert cuttings of a variety of plants using different methods from the plants in the gardens at Hillsborough Castle.

  • 20 July – Summer Highlights Walk
    Explore the gardens at Hillsborough Castle with Gardener Nicky Armstrong, as she guides you through the herbaceous borders and up Yew Tree Walk to see the 'Superbloom' of meadow flowers.
